Belinda’s Bread Recipe

I baked bread this morning and it reminded me that a few of my friends have asked that I post my recipe.  It’s an easy one that I have perfected over the years, so I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. We don’t ever by bread – haven’t for several years now. I always do it by hand rather than in a mixer, because I love the feeling of warm dough in my hands.

3 Cups warm water

2 Tbls yeast

3 Tbls sugar

1 Tbls salt

1/4 Cup butter (half a stick)

About 8 cups flour

I usually mix everything but the flour together really well, then start adding the flour. Once it’s no longer sticky, knead it till a nice dough forms.

Let it rest for 20 minutes

Turn the oven to 375 and divide the dough in half and shape into two loaves. Place in greased loaf pans and let it rise for about 20 minutes while the oven heats up.  Bake for half an hour. Bob’s your uncle, you’re done.

We usually grind our own wheat and when I’m baking wheat bread, I use about 2 – 3 cups of ground wheat and the rest white flour. When using ground wheat, make sure you add the wheat first and mix it into the water really well and let it sit for a minute before adding the white flour, because the wheat absorbs more water and you don’t want to end up with dry bread.
